Develop defensive organisation in a back three system, focusing on compactness, pressing triggers, and denying penetration through central areas.
• Possession with a purpose is key. • Think forward, look forward, play forward - especially the CB’s. • Move the ball - short, short, long. • Identify moments to move out of a passing lane, to draw an opponent out and open a bigger passing lane to the wide players. • Wide players are on 2 touches so give them the correct weight of pass and to the back foot so they can cross into the finishing zone space. • Compact Shape – The defensive 3 must stay connected & deny central penetration. • Pressing Triggers – Identify moments to press aggressively, especially when the ball is played into a tight space. • Communication & Leadership – Centre-back must dictate the defensive line and instruct teammates on when to step, cover, or drop. • Defending Wide Areas – Wing-backs or outside centre-backs must close down wide players efficiently without overcommitting. • Recovery Runs – If the defence is broken, players must recover quickly to protect the goal.
