Overloads and Combinations

Develop players’ ability to combine in small groups to break pressure, find the free player, and advance through zones. The session focuses on creating and using overloads in wide and central areas to progress the ball with timing, awareness, and support play.

Coaching Points Positional Play and Overloads • Recognise your overloads early and exploit them • Play off the back foot to open out and see the pitch • Third man runs or passes to escape pressure • Don’t force central play when wide space is free Combination Play • 1-2s, third man runs, overlaps, bounce passes • Play with disguise and tempo • Use correct weight and angle of pass • Communicate early and move immediately after passing Body Shape and Scanning • Always open up to receive • Scan before receiving to identify support or threats • Receive on the back foot where possible Transition Moments • Can you immediately counter-press if you lose it? • Can you break with pace if you win it?
